Jesus Completed the Old Covenant

Understanding Jesus’ Fulfillment of the Old Covenant

Hello, my name is Richard Kent and Today I want to delve into a topic that may seem different but holds profound significance: how Jesus completely fulfilled the Old Covenant.

Jesus’ Fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets

We are familiar with the concept that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin and as stated in 1 John 1 also at the Last Supper, Jesus declared, “This is the blood of the new covenant.” However, let’s explore how Jesus precisely fulfilled the Old Covenant.

The Old Covenant: Day of Atonement

In the Old Covenant, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest who was chosen by lot for that year and would select two adult male goats, both flawless. One goat would be set free so therefore called the scapegoat whilst the other became the sacrificial lamb. This sacrificial lamb was slaughtered and its blood collected in a basin.

The Atonement Process

The high priest would then enter the holy place, and through the curtain into the holy of holies they would be carrying the basin of blood. In this pitch-black space, he would also pray for forgiveness for the sins of the Hebrew people, pouring the blood onto the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. Upon this act, God would manifest in Shekinah glory and therefore forgiving the sins of the people.

Jesus’ Fulfillment: Symbolism

Now, let’s examine how Jesus fulfilled this typology. Barabbas and Jesus were presented to the crowds by Pontius Pilate. Barabbas, meaning “son of the father,” who was chosen over Jesus so effectively symbolizing the substitution of the Son of God and also the Lamb of God, for the son of Satan.

Jesus: High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb

According to the book of Hebrews, Jesus served as the high priest for the world that day. He became the sacrificial lamb and also died at three o’clock in the afternoon—the exact time the Passover lambs were sacrificed.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

In an eternal perspective, Jesus, as the high priest, entered the heavenly Tabernacle, not made by human hands, and sprinkled his own blood on the mercy seat. This act ensured our eternal salvation, fulfilling the Old Covenant completely.

Conclusion: Reflecting on Jesus’ Sacrifice

As we reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice, let us remember the profound symbolism and fulfillment of the Old Covenant in his life and death. Next time you partake in communion, consider the depth of Jesus’ sacrifice and the redemption it offers.

Thank you for listening, and God bless you.
