Evidently the exact location of the tunnel has also been kept secret by the authorities. Since there are no official publications about this, we can only guess the possible reasons for this.

The Middle East has been an area of major international conflict ever since the birth of Israel in 1948, as is very apparent in TV and newspaper coverage. According to the Bible, these tensions will increase, and conclude at the Battle of Armageddon.
It is possible that the Israeli authorities in 1982 considered that the production of the Ark of the Covenant would only increase international tensions in Jerusalem, but since there have been no official publications, this is pure guesswork.
