Moses Receives Ten Commandments

The worship of other gods was forbidden by God

Moses Receives 10 Commandments Whilst Moses was high on Mount Sinai, he received from God the two stone tablets, on which was written the Ten Commandments. The first two commandments read as follows:

Exodus 20:1-6: “And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments” NKJV.

At the very time when God was giving Moses these commandments, the Children of Israel were already disobeying the first two of them! When Moses returned down from Mount Sinai, he was extremely angry. He broke the tablets of stone, and burned the golden calf idol. He also scattered the remains on water, and made the people drink the water.

Exodus 32:19-20: “So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it” NKJV.
