6. OLD COVENANT : The High Priest then put incense on the burning coals of the altar
The incense around the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Covenant was to prevent the high priest seeing the face and dying (Exodus 33:20).
6. NEW COVENANT : The whole Earth was in pitch darkness for 3 hours
During the Crucifixion, it was pitch dark all over the whole planet Earth, as recoded by historians such as Phlegon, Julius Africanus, Joannes Philopanus, Malelas, Origen, Eusebius and Maximus.
The book of Isaiah 66:1 records “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool”.
It is therefore entirely appropriate that the whole Earth became the Temple, and was darkened for three hours, during the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Should anyone have seen the Face of God at this time, they would have died.
