In order to fully understand the typology of the Old Covenant we need to study certain subjects, using the Bible as our source of wisdom.
The Veil
In Hebrews 9: 3 we are reminded that “there was a curtain, and behind the curtain was a room called the Holy of Holies”.
However, in Hebrews 9: vv 3, 11, 12, we are told that when Jesus Christ passed through this veil, He entered Heaven, and sprinkled his Blood on the Mercy Seat of the Tabernacle in Heaven:
“He came as High Priest of this better system that we now have… He went into that greater, perfect tabernacle in heaven, not made by men nor part of this world, and once for all took blood into that inner room, the Holy of Holies, and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat; but it was not the blood of goats and calves. No, He took His own Blood, and with it He, by Himself, made sure of our eternal salvation.” (TLB)
The Burning Coals
This whole passage in Leviticus 16 about the incense on the burning coals of fire, is actually a picture painted by the Holy Spirit of faith filled prayer made by the high priest, over the Mercy Seat, before the throne of God.
This is a perfect picture of Jesus Christ before the Throne of God, as we shall see later.
The Incense
We are told in Revelation 5 that the “incense” is a picture of the prayers of the saints. This is described in Revelation 5:8, “Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints”.
The burning coals of fire
The four living creatures are described in Ezekiel as “like burning coals of fire”. This is described in Ezekiel 1:13, “As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of torches”.
